A familiar desktop, tuned for gaming and development

OrielOS is a free and open-source Linux desktop for PCs with NVIDIA RTX graphics. Coming from Windows? The taskbar, Start menu, keyboard shortcuts and Settings are where you expect them.

In early development. Nothing to download yet.

Why OrielOS

Where it stands

  1. Now

    Development builds

Tested in virtual machines while the core pieces come together.

  2. Next

    First release

An installer for desktop PCs with NVIDIA RTX graphics, 20-series or newer.

  3. After that

    AMD and Intel graphics

Support for more graphics cards, and perhaps laptops and handhelds later on.

Already working in development builds

  • A Fedora system image with NVIDIA’s driver, signed for Secure Boot
  • The KDE Plasma desktop with a centred taskbar and OrielOS’s own look
  • Windows keyboard shortcuts such as Win+E, Win+R and Ctrl+Shift+Esc
  • The Store, with apps from Flathub, and Firefox
  • Updates on restart, with a way back to the previous version
  • Boot settings that meet Easy Anti-Cheat’s Linux requirements

What you’ll need

Graphics
NVIDIA RTX, 20-series or newer
Computer
A desktop PC
Firmware
UEFI with Secure Boot turned on
Internet
Wi-Fi or Ethernet while installing

Known limitations

  • Some online games won’t run. Games whose publishers block Linux in their anti-cheat, such as Valorant, League of Legends, Call of Duty and Battlefield 6, can’t be played on any Linux system. OrielOS shows which games work and which are blocked.
  • No hibernation. The secure boot settings that anti-cheat needs rule it out. Sleep works as normal.
  • No Microsoft 365 or Adobe apps. They have no Linux versions. Use their web versions or Linux alternatives.
  • Not affiliated with Microsoft. OrielOS follows layouts and habits people know from Windows, but uses none of Microsoft’s logos, fonts, icons, sounds or wallpapers.
